Happy spring, or something like
that…we are looking forward to our first Wausau Striders workout of the season
next Tuesday, April 29th at 5:30 pm, where we will meet in front of
the Wausau East track, in Parking Lot H (address is 2607 N 18th St) at East.
We started a little later this year but this looked like a good idea as it was
one of the worst and longest winters on record. For our first workout, we
plan to do a matchup relay where each person of a setup 2-person team runs 1600
meters, then 1200m, 800m, & 400m while their teammate rests while the other is
running. The strategy is to pair up individuals to make the teams as even
as possible. This will build some camaraderie to start off our season –
hopefully we have a good turnout for our first workout, as last year we had
great attendance throughout the season.
Last year we met for 26 consecutive Tuesday nights, through October, and will again this year. We did a lot of staple distance running workouts on the track such as 3 x 1600 meters, 4 x 1200m, 5 x 1000m, 6 x 800m, 12 x 400m, and other ladder-type workouts. Intermixed within these weeks (every 2 or 3) were varying hill workouts at Sylvan Hill, doing 5 x 0.4 miles uphill or ladder hill ascents (long ones down to sprints) using cones to mark the course. A lot of high-quality workouts were done last year, and with a nice quantity and quality of individuals there -- we had between 6 to 9 people for almost every Tuesday, and we even had 13 people attending one of our workouts last year (word got out)! We had some really nice growth for our running club in 2013, and I would like to thank those of you who came to multiple workouts – Todd Suckow, Jeffrey Quednow, Jason Bond, Perry Dau, Kody Guden, Mark Beversdorf, Andy Haeger, Scott Hansen, Mike McQueen, David Lyon, Seth Alwin, Tim Olson, Jeffrey Smail, Amanda Murphy, Mark Thuot, Collin Csuy, Sandi & Brody Hildebrandt and of course Andy & Brooke Davis – thank you also to anyone who brought their friends to the workouts, this was definitely appreciated also – we probably had over 30 different individuals come to our workouts last year! I was able to organize every one of these workouts and run with and coach all of you last summer and I had a great time doing so.
