Expo Schedule
Program for Nordic Walking Expo at Hyland Park,
June 12, 2010 each is 30 minutes in length. Free
admission.
9:00 (Class) So you think you can walk?
Presented by Malin Svensson
(NWNA)
Nordic Walking is an enhancement of regular walking.
First learn some simple steps in regular walking to majorly improve your Nordic
Walking technique. Then you will be ready to try out Malin’s latest
walking workout featured in the April 2010 issue of Fitness magazine. As
presented in her book Outdoor Adventures: Nordic Walking (Human
Kinetics May 2009), this specific session is without poles.
9:30 (Lecture) Injury Prevention for Nordic
Walkers Presented by Suzanne Nottingham (NWN)
Join Nordic Walk Now’s owner/director Suzanne
Nottingham to dive into the world of Nordic walking skills and movements to
identify the safest and most effective techniques to keep you safe and injury-
free. Experience the relationship between the equipment, the ground surface and
your body as they coordinate together to create the ultimate workout experience.
10-10:30 and beyond if desired (Class) Walk around
Hyland
NWNA and GLNW welcome everyone to start off the first
Nordic Walk with the top three Nordic Walking educators Tom Rutlin
(Exerstrider), Suzanne Nottingham (Nordic Walk Now) and Malin Svensson (NWNA).
11:30 (Lecture) “That Girl” 2010: new city, new
job and new life, or how I started my own Nordic Walking business.
Presented by Lindy Spiezer Smith
Almost everyone attending the Expo has a story of
turning their Nordic Walking talents into a business so what makes this
different? The odds against this start-up Nordic Walking business succeeding
were high and yet it did, making a profit in one year. Lindy will share some of
the planned strategy and dumb luck that led to turning passion for Elder-health
into a business.
12:00 (Class) K9 Nordic Walking
Presented by Kristine Zellmer with her Alaskan Huskie Caird (Skijor Now)
K9 Nordic walking is an exciting new sport that
allows you to enjoy exercise and the outdoors with your dog. Instead of leaving
Rover at home when you head towards your favorite trail, allow him to pull you
similar to the way a skijoring dog pulls a skier in winter. Because your dog is
connected to you via a padded waist belt, you can continue to Nordic walk
comfortably behind without holding a leash. Besides the benefit of time outdoors
with your dog, your canine companion will enjoy robust exercise from pulling
(significantly more exercise than a walk on a leash).Harnesses will be available
if you’d like to bring your dog
12:30 (Lecture) Active Aging through Nordic
Walking Presented by Linda Lemke (GLNW)
Let Nordic Walking help you stay active to stay
mobile. Nordic Walking improves your balance and stability (less chance of a
fall), supports your lower joints and helps promote healthy bones with upper
body weight bearing exercise all while walking. It’s fun, it’s social and it’s
outdoors, all contributing factors to a healthy active life.
1:00 (Class) Intro to Exerstride® Method Nordic
Walking Presented by Tom Rutlin (Exerstrider)
Learn and experience the simple basics of this
original “Nordic American” method of fitness walking with specially designed
poles which he first introduced in the U.S. more than 20 years ago, in 1988.
Pole walking pioneer Tom Rutlin will conduct this technique instruction class,
as well as familiarize participants with the unique and innovative design
features of his Exerstrider® poles — and his “good use” total body exercise
philosophy.
1:30 (Lecture) Burn More Calories with Less Effort Presented by Malin Svensson (NWNA)
Join walking and fitness expert Malin Svensson
(President of Nordic Walking North America), as she reveals her 7 simple secrets
on how to “Burn More Calories with Less Effort.” You will walk away with
effective tips on how to get into your best shape ever. And you will learn
how to overcome the most common obstacles to exercising through Nordic Walking.
2:00 (Class) Boot Camp 1
Presented by Suzanne Nottingham (NWN)
Join Nordic Walk Now founder and director Suzanne
Nottingham for a fun and original outdoor cross training excursion in Boot Camp
1 from her recently released book, Nordic Walking for Total Fitness. This
class is intended as a movement experience through safe and progressive training
methods. Everyone is welcome but must have some experience Nordic walking. If
not, take a free lesson at the Expo first! The intensity is mixed–some easy,
some moderate and some challenging (only if you want it). Due to the nature of
some of the drills, appropriate footwear is required to take this class.
2:30 (Lecture) Play it Safe, Nordic Walking
Jeopardy Presented by Bonnie Dau (Revel Sports)
Nordic walking is naturally a fun and safe activity.
Just an ounce of prevention can make it safer yet. Join Bonnie for fun and
laughter as she will be counting on audience participation to play the game of
Jeopardy which will highlight ways to “Play it Safe while Nordic Walking”.
Revel Sports will be giving out nominal prizes to all of the winners.
3:00 (Class) Nordic Walking Adventure Circuit
Presented by Gary Johnson (NWNA)
Add a variety of exercises to your Nordic Walk by
taking advantage of the equipment all around you. The class is interval in
nature and incorporates upper and lower body exercises. A fun way to spice
up your workout and get a great whole body workout
3:30 (Lecture) The Future of Nordic walking…
Impacting Public Health on a Global Scale Presented by Tom
Rutlin (Exerstrider)
While some view Nordic walking simply as an emerging
trend in exercise or view it as a new sport, a growing number in the movement
share a far greater vision for the activity — impacting public health on a
global scale! Tom Rutlin will describe why he and others in the movement
see Nordic walking as having the potential to have the greatest impact on global
public health of any exercise trend that’s come along since Dr. Kenneth Cooper’s
book AEROBICS launched the modern exercise movement more than four decades ago.
