  • Extra-wide comfort top band keeps sleeve comfortably in place
  • Less aching & cramping to optimize performance potential
  • Stabilizes & diminishes vibrations of active muscles
  • Ideal for triathletes—fabric doesn't deteriorate in salt or chlorine water

The sleeve features 20-30mmHg of graduated compression, is worn around the lower part of the leg, and is constructed  fast-drying fabric that may be worn on land or in water. The calf sleeve is tightest at the ankle and decreases in pressure going up the leg to help increase circulation during rigorous workouts.

When an athlete slips on a SIGVARIS sports product, he or she is benefiting from the science behind “true graduated compression” – compression that is strongest at the ankle and gradually diminishes as it goes up the leg. “True graduated compression” helps fight the force of gravity and circulate blood back to the heart and lungs more efficiently. When blood is properly circulated, it provides much-needed oxygen and nutrients to tired muscles that have been, or are being, deprived during a workout. Unlike the SIGVARIS Active Therapy products, many other sports products do not feature “true graduated compression.”

Sigvaris Graduated Compression Calf Sleeves

True Graduated Compression
When an athlete slips on SIGVARIS Active Therapy Socks, his or her legs will instantly feel supported and comfortable, but the real benefit of wearing true graduated compression happens at a deeper level. All SIGVARIS Active Therapy Socks use the science of true graduated compression. This means that the compression is strongest at the ankle and gradually diminishes up the leg (see diagram below). These compression socks act as a layer of muscle, gently squeezing stretched vein walls. This built-in feature helps fight the force of gravity and circulate blood back to the heart more efficiently. True Graduated Compression Compression is greatest at the ankle, gradually decreasing up the leg. When blood is properly circulated, it restores much-needed oxygen and nutrients to tired muscles that have been deprived during a workout. Active Therapy Socks help muscles regenerate more efficiently and help to remove any lactic acid that has built up. Today’s athletes understand that true graduated compression helps their performance, which is why athletes worldwide won’t leave home without these socks. Note: When shopping for athletic compression socks, keep in mind that many brands don’t actually offer the benefits of true graduated compression. The Active Therapy Line was created by SIGVARIS, a company with more than 50 years in the medical compression industry.

SIGVARIS, the global leader in graduated compression garments, introduces the first product of the Active Therapy collection: The Athletic Recovery sock. The Athletic Recovery sock helps to flush out the lactic acids built up in the leg muscles during exercise, as well as relieve tired, aching legs and exercise-induced muscle soreness.

A growing trend among competitive athletes is the use of compression therapy socks to help improve their athletic performance. Compression therapy is a hot topic in sports media right now as a growing number of Triathletes, marathon runners and professional sports athletes are trying compression socks during performance to improve their results. Whether it’s during the actual event, after the event, or even while traveling, athletes are making graduated compression socks part of their everyday attire.

Introducing the SIGVARIS Athletic Recovery Sock

SIGVARIS, the global leader in graduated compression garments, introduces the first product of the Active Therapy collection: The Athletic Recovery Sock. The Athletic Recovery sock helps to flush out the lactic acid built up in the leg during exercise, relieving tired, aching legs and exercise-induced muscle soreness.

Not All Compression Is Created Equal

A number of sock manufacturers are claiming to offer “compression” socks for athletic use. Unfortunately, many of these “compression” socks do not have true graduated compression. Instead, they may feature a tight foot band, or vertical stripes, or a wide variety of features meant to imply foot or leg support.

SIGVARIS Socks For Competitive Athletes and Weekend Warriors

The good news is graduated compression therapy can help athletes of all levels, from top performers down to weekend warriors! Compression therapy can be worn during and after athletic performance to improve results as well as recovery. To help educate consumers about the benefits of compression therapy in athletic recovery.

The Science Behind The SIGVARIS Athletic Recovery Sock [15-20 mmHg]
A number of medical studies support the belief that wearing graduated compression socks or stockings can reduce recovery time and improve athletic performance. A partial list of relevant studies is included below.

Graduated compression stockings:  Physiological and perceptual responses during and after exercise Journal of Sports Sciences, Volume 25, Issue 4  January 2007, Pages 413-419.  Authors:  Ali, A.., Caine, M.P. and Snow, B.G.

Abstract summary:  The aim of this study was to examine the effect of wearing graduated compression stockings (GCS) on physiological and perceptual variables during and after intermittent and continuous running exercise.  Fourteen recreational runners performed two multi-stage intermittent shuttle running tests with 1 hour recovery between tests.  A further 14 participants performed a fast-paced continuous 10 km road run.  Participants wore commercially available knee-length graduated compression stockings (pressure at ankle 18-22 mmHg).  In randomized counterbalanced design.  During 10-k trials, there was a reduction in delayed-onset muscle soreness 24 h after exercise when wearing graduated compression stockings.  There was a marked difference in the frequency and location of soreness:  Wearing graduated compression stockings during a 10-km road run appears to reduce delayed-onset muscle soreness after exercise in recreationally active men.  There is a need for research investigating whether GCS can benefit other user groups including untrained participants, females and older athletes.  .

Graduated Compression Stockings and Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness
Engineering of Sport 7, Vol I, Springer publication.  ISBN-13 978-287-99053,
Pages 547-551 .  2009.

Abstract summary:  Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a common experience following unaccustomed eccentric exercise.  The cause of delayed onset muscle soreness is poorly understood.  In this study, subjects volunteered to perform a single bout of backward downhill walking exercise for 30 minutes.  Following this exercise, subjects were required to wear graduated compression stockings for 5 hours per day for 3 consecutive days on one leg while the second leg was used as control.  Muscle soreness and neuromuscular measures were taken pre and post walk, then 2, 24, 48 and 72 hours post-walking exercise for the two legs.  There was a 28% reduction in DOMS on the leg wearing graduated compression stockings 72 hours after exercise. Additionally, the leg wearing GCS, MVT (maximal voluntary torque) starts to recover while the contractile properties had significantly recovered within 24 h, but not in the control leg.  It is theorized that in this study, the GCS might have had the effect of compressing the muscle tissue to such an extent that less structural damage occurred relative to a control condition.  GCS accelerated the recovery of the muscle force capacity at 24 hours beyond that achieved by the control condition.

Effects of Graduated Compression Stockings on Blood Lactate Following an Exhaustive Bout of Exercise.   Berry MJ, McMurray RG.  Am J. Phys Med. 1987, Jun; 66(3): 121-32

Abstract summary: To determine the effects of wearing graduated compression stockings (GCS) on the exercise response, twelve high fit males served as subjects in a series of two experiments measuring maximal oxygen consumption.  The test participants were split into groups who (1) wore graduated compression stockings during the test and recovery; (2) worn during the test only and (3) wore no stockings.  The first test was done on a treadmill and the second test on a bicycle ergometer.  Oxygen consumption was measured at rest, throughout the duration of all tests and during recovery in both experiments.  Blood samples were also obtained for the determination of lactate and hematocrit.  Results showed that there was no significant difference in oxygen consumption, recovery oxygen consumption or plasma volume; however, the lactate values were lower in both tests throughout the duration of the recovery period with the use of graduated compression stockings.  These lower values are not ascribable to plasma volume shifts but rather appear to be due to an inverse gradient created by the GCS resulting in the lactate being retained in the muscular bed.

The Risk of DVT in Endurance Athletes

The risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) applies to any type of long distance travel that involves long periods of sitting, such as plane, car, train or bus.  According to a British study, "all forms of transport involving a journey of 4 hours or more led to an increase in the risk of blood clots forming in the veins of the legs"  Advice on travel-related DVT.  Yuet Wan. 2007 British Department of Health, 12 March, 2007 (http://www.dh.gov.uk.en/Publichealth/Healthprotection/BloodsafeetryDVT/DH_4123480

An estimated 85% of air travel thrombosis victims are athletic, usually endurance athletes.   AirHealth.org/athletes.  July 11, 2004    One effective way to increase leg and foot comfort during long distance travel is by wearing graduated compression socks or stockings.  High quality compression socks and stockings prevents many symptoms like swelling, and helps reduce the risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
